While not all people are not afraid of the idea of getting dental implants, many don’t consider the procedure their idea of fun either. In most cases however, this lack of enthusiasm can be attributed to many of the myths and misconceptions surrounding dental implants and dental care in general.

Below are some of the myths and misconceptions about dental implants and the truth behind them:

Myth:

Dental implants are very expensive

Truth:

While dental implants can have a higher initial cost compared to other dental procedures, they are well worth it as they are deemed more dependable compared to other options.

Bridges, which are very popular often last only from 7 to 15 years. That means in a few years, you’ll need to spend money again to have them replaced. Dental implants on the other hand don’t need to be replaced as often.

Myth:

Dental implant procedure is painful

Truth:

While some patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure, experiencing pain is very unlikely. For those who experience high levels of anxiety or fear during the procedure, there are sedation options that are used.

Myth:

The implants will look fake

Truth:

Many people are actually pleasantly surprised at how real and natural their dental implants look. Many people also reported that their implants look so natural that people rarely even notice they’re no longer their natural teeth.

Myth:

Caring for implants is difficult

Truth:

Once the dental implants are in, it is actually extremely easy to look after them. You don’t need to do anything extra other than observe and adhere to exceptional oral practices. Floss and brush as usual. What’s even more amazing is that you no longer have to worry about getting tooth decay or cavities.

Myth:

Only few people are candidates for dental implants

Truth:

While it’s not an option that’s recommended for everyone, many people are actually candidates for the procedure. In fact, it is estimated that in the United States alone, a staggering 70 percent aged 35 and 44 are missing one (or more) teeth. In addition, nearly a quarter of Americans aged 74 and over are missing some of their teeth.

Myth:

Dental implants are not safe

Truth:

Dental implants have been used for many decades now. Not only that, it has an impressive 95 percent success rate. This means both the implants and the procedure itself have been proven to be safe.

While some people believe dental implants can cause migraines, nothing can be farther from the truth. If anything, migraines are often the result of other underlying health issues like TMJ or other complications and not from the implants or the procedure.

Myth:

Anyone is a good candidate for dental implants

Truth:

While the procedure is considered extremely safe, it is always not the best option for everyone. For starters, dentists need to look at certain factors first to help them gauge if a patient is indeed a good fit for the procedure.

One of the primary factors looked into is the quality of the bone tissue in the mouth. If the quality of the bone tissue in the mouth is not that good anymore, other dental procedures may be recommended instead.
